Earn your Junior Certificate in Fashion Design with SFD

Are you a high school senior considering taking a gap year?
Are you interested in exploring if fashion design is right for you?

Beginning in Fall 2026, the School of Fashion Design will be offering a Junior Certificate in Fashion Design for high school graduates seeking a creative gap year experience. 

The SFD Fashion Gap Year consists of six courses taken over the course of nine months, September – May.  Students take three courses per semester.  Fashion Gap Year students have access to the same facilities, professional equipment, expert teaching instruction, and student activities as students in our professional Certificate in Fashion Design program.

 
 

Fashion Gap Year Junior Certificate:

Fall 2026 semester, September – December, 15 weeks                                                                               

  • Fashion Sketching Level 1

  • Pattern Making Level 1

  • Clothing Construction Level 1

Spring 2027 semester, January – May, 15 weeks                                                     

  • 2D/3D Design Fundamentals

  • French Draping Level 1

  • CAD Art Level 1 (computer aided design)

Students completing all six courses will be eligible to present work at our annual end-of-year student fashion show in May.  Students completing the program will receive a Junior Certificate in Fashion Design from the School of Fashion Design. Students completing the program are also eligible to continue their studies with SFD, with all six courses applying toward completion of our full 20-course professional Certificate in Fashion Design.


Fashion Gap Year Program costs

$8,010 plus fees and supplies.
Payment plans are available.

  • No portfolio required for admission.

  • Final course schedule and registration will be available in June 2026.

Note: The School of Fashion Design is a private nonprofit studio arts school, licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Occupational Licensure, Office of Private Occupational School Education. Acceptance of SFD courses for credit at another degree granting college or university is subject to approval of that institution.
