YEAR-END REVIEW:

This year the School of Fashion Design celebrated it's 75th anniversary in style! Check out our pictorial year-end review of all the exciting projects and special events that took place in 2009 as we prepare for the coming new year!

 IRIS

Fashion icon Iris Apfel inspired all who met her or experienced  the brilliant exhibit 'Rare Bird of Fashion' at the Peabody Essex Museum. The school partnered with the museum to involve faculty and students in special fashion programming through out the fall. PEM.org

 FIRST LADY

Student designers celebrated the new first lady by designing a collection of stunning inaugural gowns inspired by Mrs. Obama.

The school participated in the D2E event/fashion show at the Hynes Convention Center supporting sustainable style. http://www.d2eboston.com

 FGI: THE LAUNCH

Alum designer Eddi Phillips was one of five designers selected by the Fashion Group International of Boston board for a special event held at the BCAE called 'The Launch' designed to spotlight new local talent.

Fashion Boston editor Alexandra Hall hosted a special FGI event at Macy's where the public could meet the designers and see models wearing their creations up close.

Macy's featured the five designers in a window display at the store in Downtown Crossing.

 FAIR TRADE

Alum Anne O'Loughlin of the Autonomie Project was one of the forces behind the Fair Trade Boston, an expo held at Artists for Humanity.

During Boston Fashion Week Anne participated in the Style Summit panel discussion about "new life styles in fashion".

 ZEYNEP MICELI

Student fashion designer Zeynep Miceli was featured in an exhibit at the Copley Place Mall during Boston Fashion Week.

RUNWAY  

 

The Faulkner Hospital and the School of Fashion Design presented ‘Runway’ a gala to benefit the Faulkner-Sagoff Centre. The night’s events included a fashion design competition and runway show which featured five design students from the School of Fashion Design. The event was hosted by Gretchen Monahan and celebrity judges Emmett McCarthy, Tonya Chen Mezrich, Kevin Christiana and Lisa Pierpont. The judges selected Jessica Lee as the overall winner with Kelly Higgins selected as the audience favorite.

IN THE CAR MEDIA  

 

As part of ‘Runway’, In The Car Media collaborated with Gretchen Monahan to develop video profiles of the five student designers: Kae Bae, Victoria Dominguez, Kelly Higgins, Jessica Lee & Kira McClellan which were shown during the Faulkner-Sagoff Gala. In The Car Media

FASHION PREP  

The Third Annual Fashion Prep, a panel discussion for teens interested in the many facets of fashion and design took place at the Boston Public Library and drew a record crowd during Boston Fashion Week. FORM TO FASHION FINALE  

 

Director James Hannon and Kate Braun at the Form to Fashion Finale. Visitors to Natick Collection voted student designer Kae Bae best in school. Kae was honored alongside fashion students from other schools at a reception held at the Natick Collection.

ICA: DESIGN AS SOCIAL AGENT  

 

In a collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Art, School of Fashion Design students developed a fashion comic book called 'The Good, The Bad, The Runway' that reflected the theme Design as Social Agent, as part of the Shepard Fairey exhibit. POP UP STUDIO @ PEM  

 

Instructor Jay Calderin & alum Victoria Dominguez created a pop-up studio in the Atrium of the Peabody Essex Museum to show audiences the process of developing a garment. PEM.org

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY  

Photographic testings proved to be a great way for student designers like Maitraya Black to collaborate with prominent local photographers like Tracy Aiguier and professional models from Maggie Inc. Tracy Aiguier teaches a special fashion photography class on Saturdays!

FORM FIT & FASHION  

Instructor Jay Calderin's first book called 'Form, Fit & Fashion' was released by Rockport Publishers in the US, Canada and the UK. The Los Angeles Times said, "A new fashion bible for designers, aspirers and the just plain curious, this tome contains all the secrets."
