The Computer Aided Design courses at SFD have been designed to expose design students -- who have demonstrated a mastery of core production and art skills -- to the virtual tools available through CAD software. These courses are also structured to encourage analytical thinking and utilize creative problem solving so that with minor modifications a designer can become acclimated to most systems used in the industry.

 

CAD FOR FASHION DESIGN: APPAREL I

Pattern manipulation, grading and marker-making - Software: Accumark – Gerber Technology

Wednesday     5:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Prerequisite: Comprehension of pattern-making, grading, marker-making and construction; a fundamental understanding of the Windows environment.

  

CAD FOR FASHION DESIGN: ART – June 12th through July 31st

Design print, woven & knit textiles. Render technical sketches. Color and drape textiles on fashion images. Develop virtual presentation boards. Software: Vision Fashion Studio & Draping – Gerber Technology & Adobe Illustrator.

Thursday          5:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Prerequisite: Comprehension of textiles, sketching and portfolio presentation; a fundamental understanding of the Windows environment.

 

BRIDALWEAR

Tues/Thurs         5:30 pm – 7:45 pm

Presumes command of Pattern Making and Construction I & II, and French Draping I

 

CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION

Practical projects in fabricating garments designed in the patternmaking courses; stylized and fitted muslins, selection and preparation of fabric, cutting, matching, hand sewing and industrial machine stitching, lining, pressing, detailing and finishing.

FASHION SKETCHING

Principles of design (line, form, space, texture, balance, proportion, harmony, emphasis). Principles of color (value, harmony). Application of the principles of good design to fashion. Principles and techniques of presenting designs on paper; ie., croquis, costume anatomy, media, fabric renderings, the fashion figure.

FRENCH DRAPING II

Advanced muslin patterns. Projects include convertibles, designs from fabric and period pieces.

HANDBAG DESIGN (This course will require two offsite visits to the instructor’s studio/workshop in Wayland, MA.)

HISTORY OF COSTUME

A survey of costume (psychology, fabrics, colors and styles) from prehistory to 1900 focusing on sources of inspiration for contemporary fashion design as well as theatrical costuming.

A survey of costume (psychology, fabrics, colors and styles) from 1900 to current day.

MILLINERY

Inspiration, design, construction and detail of headwear; patterned, blocked or framed.

PATTERN MAKING

Principles, techniques and practice in making patterns for women’s garments, via both the flat (drafted) paper and the form (draped) muslin method. Basic slopers and stylized patterns.

TEXTILE WORKSHOP

Identification, analysis and testing of fibers and fabrics and their uses, suitability and care in apparel. Practical textile experience in designing a fashion item.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES IN FASHION DESIGN ($360 per section)

 

SECTION I: CREATING A COHESIVE CONCEPT – June 10th through June 19th   

A 2-week workshop series focused on research and development, branding, communications and styling.

A 2-week workshop series focused on marketing, visual display and merchandising, fashion writing, and fashion show production.

THE SCHOOL OF FASHION DESIGN POLICIES

 

CLASS HOURS – GRADES – CREDITS: ALL COURSES ARE FOR 45 CLASS HOURS *, MEETING EITHER ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK FOR LECTURE/STUDIO/LAB. FOR EACH HOUR OF CLASS, AN INSTRUCTOR EXPECTS A MINIMUM OF TWO HOURS OF HOMEWORK. ALL COURSES SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED EARN 3 CREDITS EACH.

 

TUITION – SUPPLIES – FEES: TUITION IS $1,080 PER INDIVIDUAL COURSE ** PLUS THE REGISTRATION FEE. A DETAILED SUPPLY LIST FOR EACH COURSE ACCOMPANIES THE FINAL TUITION BILLING, WHICH IS DUE BEFORE SEPTEMBER 1 (JAN. 1, JUNE 1). FOR REGISTRATION AND/OR TUITION AND SUPPLY ORDERS RECEIVED AFTER SEPTEMBER 1 (JAN. 1, JUNE 1), THERE IS A $25 LATE REGISTRATION FEE AND A $25 LATE SUPPLY FEE, AND PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE IN THE FORM OF A MONEY ORDER OR BANK CHECK. NO PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED AFTER SEPTEMBER 1 (JAN. 1, JUNE 1). ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO PREPAY ONCE DURING THE CALENDAR YEAR (WHICH BEGINS JUNE 1) THE $80 FASHION SHOW SUBSCRIPTION FEE (WHICH INCLUDES PARTICIPATION IN THE FASHION SHOW VIA GARMENTS AND/OR SKETCHES, AS WELL AS TWO TICKETS TO SFD’S ANNUAL LUNCHEON/FASHION SHOW).

 

DESIGN PROCESS: ALL COURSES INVOLVING GARMENTS PRESUME THAT THEY ARE MADE UP IN STANDARD MODEL SIZES (8, 10, and 12). ALL DESIGNS ARE TO BE SUBMITTED TO FACULTY FOR CROQUIS REVIEW, MUSLIN REVIEW, DIRECTOR’S CRIT, AND JUDGING (SELECTION MADE FOR FASHION SHOW PRESENTATION). ALL GARMENTS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A FINAL PROSPECTUS OR PLATE (SWATCHED SKETCH).

 

NO REFUND POLICY: ALL TUITION PREPAID IS FOR A SPECIFIC COURSE AND FOR A SPECIFIC TERM. TUITIONS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE FOR WHATEVER REASON, AND ARE NOT CREDITABLE TOWARDS OTHER COURSES OR OTHER TERMS. SFD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CANCEL COURSES FOR WHICH THERE ARE INSUFFICIENT ENROLLMENTS, OR TO RESCHEDULE COURSES BECAUSE OF TIME CONFLICTS. ONLY IN THE CASE OF COURSES CANCELLED OR RESCHEDULED PRIOR TO THE START OF A SEMESTER IS PREPAID TUITION REFUNDABLE.

 

ATTENDANCE

STUDENTS MUST ATTEND A MINIMUM OF 90% OF INDIVIDUAL COURSE CLASSES FOR GRADE/CREDIT.

STUDENTS WISHING TO WITHDRAW FROM A CLASS OR FROM THE COMPLETE PROGRAM MUST SO STATE IN WRITING TO THE DIRECTOR BY FILING THE OFFICIAL FORM FOR SUCH. ABSENCE FROM CLASSES DOES NOT CONSTITUTE WITHDRAWAL. WITHDRAWAL UP TO MID-SEMESTER IS RECORDED AS A "W" WITH NO GRADE AS OF DATE; THERE IS NO OFFICIAL WITHDRAWAL AFTER MID-SEMESTER.

 

DISMISSAL

SFD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO DISMISS ANY STUDENT PROVEN GUILTY OF BREACH OF ETHICS, MORALS OR CRIMINAL OFFENSE.
