A sustainable design is one that can address the long term concerns of both the production process and the customer. The fashion industry joins oil and livestock as part of the top 3 polluters affecting the environment. This has quality brands no longer asking "if" they will innovate sustainable practices but "when" and "how."
In The SFD Sustainable Design Lab, we will brainstorm the infinite "how" to come up with the innovations that will make the fashion industry thrive into the changing future. Each designers' new ideas will be translated into a standout portfolio piece using detail sketching, technical sketching and text to explain the sustainable innovations behind a three piece capsule collection. Rather than a fashion plate, this is a presentation of a designers thought process that solves these problems. These innovations are informed by the lab's discussion of sustainably sourced material options and their ideal uses, methods of labor efficient design, design that can transcend season, occasion and even size. Most important of all we ask: How can we design to stay in the wardrobe and out of the landfill?
