What level of certification do I receive at SFD?

SFD is a studio school offering a 2-year Certificate in Fashion Design, and a 3-year Diploma in Fashion Design.  Diplomas are awarded to students who complete their third year “Designer’s Line” collection in a concentration of their choice (bridal, sportswear, children’s wear, menswear, swimwear, lingerie, etc). We do not require general education courses such as English, writing, and Math.

How long is the SFD program?

Can I attend part time or just take one class?

Students may elect to attend full or part time.
You may take a class or two without being enrolled in the full program.

Do you offer Saturday or evening classes?

Yes, SFD offers flexible programming.
We offer day, evening and Saturday courses.

When can I begin taking classes?

New semesters begin each September, January and June.

What is the average age of an SFD student?

SFD students range in age (from 18 to 60+).
Some students enroll straight from high school, and some have started college or took time to start a family or career.


What level of experience do I need? Do I need a portfolio to enroll?

You must be a high school graduate or have your GED
No previous sewing or fashion experience required.
No portfolio required (although we welcome work samples if you have them)
Applicants for full time study need to submit:

    •    Full time application

    •    $50 application fee annually, nonrefundable
    •    High school or college transcripts
    •    One letter of reference
    •    Optional: portfolio review of art and/or sewing examples
    •    Optional: personal interview (if residing within 100 miles of SFD)

Do you accept International Students?

Yes!  We enroll students from around the globe!
You will need to submit certain required financial documents, such as a bank statement, verifying your ability to reside in the US for at least one year.

What is the class size?

Class size varies, but generally SFD classes are designed to be small, hands-on studio classes with personalized instruction.  You can generally expect roughly seven students per class.

What will my first semester course load look like?

Typical classes for full time, first-year students in the first semester are:

How much homework will I have?

For every classroom hour, full time students are expected to do roughly two hours of homework; full time first-year students should expect roughly 25 hours/wk of homework.

Do I need to have my own sewing machine?

Students may work at the school during posted hours, but it is recommended that students have their own machine at home.

Full-time applicants to the School of Fashion Design are required to submit the following:
    •    SFD full time application (link to application)

When are applications due?

The School of Fashion Design accepts students year-round on a rolling admissions basis. Classes fill quickly! We encourage students to enroll early to ensure a seat in our studios. We strongly encourage students to submit applications no later than 30 days prior to the start of a semester

How much does it cost to attend the School of Fashion Design?

Full time  =  $12,350 annually, plus the cost of books and supplies.
Part time =  $1,235 per course plus the cost of books and supplies.
Supplies for the first year total approximately $1,200
Students should allot approximately $300 per semester for fabric.

Does SFD offer financial aid?

SFD is a studio school focused on fashion design.  We do not require students to take English and Math, therefore, we do not accept Federal Financial aid; however


We do offer several unique scholarships of our own.
You can be a part time student and still receive a scholarship.

SFD tuition is reasonably set with student expense in mind, and the school offers a paced payment plan for tuition. Students taking courses full time are generally able to complete the program in only two years. Students completing our program should not expect to carry student loan debt upon graduation.

What is my career outlook after attending SFD?

At SFD, you learn how to be the best!  You bring your vision and creativity, and we will provide the tools for success.

We are committed to excellence in educating students in the complete fashion design process, from creation and innovation to comprehensive technical expertise, so that you are prepared to become a leader in the global fashion design industry.

You are strongly encouraged to complete an internship. The school assists students in finding internships.  We also work with students upon graduation to assist in employment searches and placement.

While studying at SFD, you are starting your own network of professional contacts in the fashion industry. Our experienced faculty will help to introduce you and your work to others in the fashion community.

Do you offer housing?

Is there parking at SFD?

Newbury Street and the Copley Square area offer on street metered parking and you can find parking garages in the area.

The school is easily accessible by the MBTA and the Commuter Rail.
The school is around the corner from the Copley stop on the Green Line and two blocks away from the Back Bay stop on the Orange Line and the Commuter Rail
